Mona Vanderwaal from the books is really no different from the one in the show. Her storyline is completely the same so far. In book three, "Perfect", Hanna receives a text from "A", though "A" made a mistake. "A" has two phones. One for her personal life and one to torment the girls. "A" accidentally uses her personal phone to send Hanna a text, revealing their true identity. Hanna in awe with the news tells the girls to meet her at the the swings (their former childhood hang out). "A" will do anything to keep their identity a secret, even if it means killing one of the girls. While Hanna is running across the parking lot to meet up with the girls, a car pulls up and speeds towards her. Hanna flies into the air, along with her personal belongings. Hanna's phone lands a few feet away from her, broken, no longer able to give proof about "A"'s identity. Hanna, due to her impact with the ground, loses her memory, forgetting who "A" actually is. "A"'s main purpose of running Hanna was to kill her. Once Emily and Aria are next to Hanna's at the time, lifeless body, they receive a text from "A" stating: "She Knew Too Much -A". The only problem is, the readers do not know that "A" is actually Mona Vanderwaal. Mona pretends as if everything is normal with Hanna to keep up appearances. Mona sends herself a threatening text message to throw them off her trail. In book four, "Unbelievable", it is revealed to the girls that Mona is in fact "A". Mona, playing along with Spencer's assumptions that "A" is Melissa , convinces her to tell the police immediately. Mona offers her a ride and Spencer accepts. Meanwhile, Hanna, Emily, and Aria, find out "A" is actually Mona. They realize Spencer is in danger being with her, so they call the police. The girls text Spencer, warning her that she is in fact with "A". Mona, noticing Spencer's awkwardness, asks if they finally found out. Spencer begins to plead, telling Mona to let her out. Mona reveals to Spencer she planned this all along to get revenge on the girls for constantly teasing her. She tells Spencer she knew all their secrets due to Alison's meticulous diary keeping. She then offers Spencer her life in return that she becomes "A" with her. Mona explains to Spencer that she has grown to like her even though she planned to frame Spencer for Alison's murder at first. Spencer rejects her offer, angering Mona. Mona attempts to kill Spencer by pushing her off the cliff of Floating Man's Quarry. In the end, Spencer knocks Mona away who falls down the cliff and breaks her neck.
